Product Engineer
Job Description
Reporting to the CEO, the Product Engineer is a critical member of the P&P Optica team. In this role, you will have a diverse range of responsibilities including mechanical design, some electrical design and implementation and supervision of the company’s production processes. The Product Engineer is also a key member of the management team, able to influence strategy and operations at this young, growing company.
This is a role for a generalist with skills in both the engineering and the operations side of an exciting technology company.
Responsibilities
Working with the CEO, Chief Scientist and the laboratory and software teams, the Product Engineer:
- Designs mechanical elements of spectrometers such as sample holders, illuminators, probes and spectrometer form factors
- Produces basic electrical designs as needed, or manages the outsourcing of this task
- Designs and develops production processes and supervises grating manufacture
- Designs and implements bill of materials system, drawings database, database of shipped products and other required support systems
- Sources suppliers for contract manufacturing of components and ensures they are produced according to specifications, on time and on budget
- Manages production capacity at all suppliers, including dual sourcing and offshoring strategies when appropriate
- Manages production schedule for small internal team to ensure all products are built and shipped per customer requirements
- Liaises with software team to ensure software modules and any customizations are complete at the appropriate time to meet production schedules
- Develops project budgets and provides Sales with product cost as a key input to pricing
- Liaises with Sales to ensure they are aware of engineering changes and any impacts on pricing or product specifications
- Focuses on all aspects of product cost and implements cost reduction strategies
- Inventory management, ensuring parts are available when needed for on-time delivery and maintenance of finished goods inventory
- Is a subject matter expert who can act in both hands on and supervisory roles
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- A “roll up the sleeves” attitude; a self starting orientation with the intense drive to “make things happen;” must be a “doer” with an infectiously enthusiastic attitude
- Proven in-depth knowledge of mechanical and electrical design
- Experience with optics, including gratings, a significant asset
- Strong skills in project management and production scheduling/management
- Inventory management experience
- Comfortable liaising with external specialists in their respective fields
- Creative, practical and a decisive professional who knows how to balance tactical and strategic issues
- Excellent time management, interpersonal, written and verbal communications, decision making, and organization skills to work with cross functional teams and coordinate major activities
- Ability to work independently under pressure, with a heavy workload in a demanding environment while managing limited resources within budget and several projects simultaneously with minimal supervision
Qualifications
- Bachelor degree in Engineering or equivalent
- 5+ years in engineering and production roles
- Experience in the optics/scientific instruments space highly desirable
